to help the citizens of new york, new jersey, and other parts of the northeast as they recover from the damn of hurricane van dihurricane sandy. as we did before, we have an opportunity to help maim make families and communities whole again. i hope my colleagues will join in moving quickly to send aid to those affected by sandy as they continue to recover and rebuild. the senate must move swiftly to approve supplemental disaster aid and act to give the intelligence community the stools tools it needs to -- the tools it needs to keep our nation safe before the christmas holiday. before we leave for chris marks we'll have to finish our work on sandy and fisa. they're both extremely important, but they have to be completed. so everyone should understand we have that to do, and it appears at this stage we'll see if anything changes -- but it appears that we're going to be coming back the day after christmas to complete work on the fiscal cliff and a few other leftover items. mr. mcconnell: mr. president, i want to start by extending my deepest sympathies to the families of the victims o

impossible to figure from week to week. eli manning and the new york giants who have looked so strong at times during the year were totally dominated by the atlanta falcons. same falcons who last week went down to carolina, shut the giants out today 34-0. >>> not long ago the bears were the nfcs number two seed today they tried to rally it home against the packers just to stay in the play off picture. this combination worked all day for green bay. aaron rogers at san jose state product in stride. just before halftime it's rogers to jones again. the bears have lost five of their last six. minnesota's rusty. the vickings took control of this game. peterson slowed a bit but then he's off to an 82 touchdown run before the day was over, peterson had rushed for 224 yards after the 36-22 win minnesota has improved to 8-6. >>> the redskins were in cleveland without the services of griffin iii. the redskins didn't miss a beat. cousins rolls out three cleveland defenders can't keep up with leonard. a pair of touchdowns and washington 38-21 when the redskins. right now would be the winners in t

. it shatters them. >> suarez: outside washington there were other calls to curb gun violence. new york city mayor michael bloomberg joined survivors and victims' relatives demanding action. >> last night the president said he would use whatever powers his office holds to address this violence. i think it is critical that he do so. words alone cannot heal our nation. only action can do that. gun violence is a national epidemic and a national tragedy that demands more than words. >> suarez: the mayor urged congress to reinstate a ban on assault-style weapons like the bushmaster a.r.15 rifle that adam lanza used friday. versions of that gun were outlawed in 1994 but the ban expired in 2004. a new poll out today from abc and the "washington post" found 54% of americans support stricter gun laws in general. still 71% oppose banning the sale of handguns. and in addition to gun control, there are new appeals to identify and help treat potentially troubled individuals before there's a tragedy. connecticut governor dan maloy spoke this afternoon in hartford. >> are we doing enough from a meantal hea

was a big fan of new york giants' star victor cruz and yesterday during the giants' game cruz wore jack's name on his uniform in his honor. noah is the youngest victim. he had just turned 6 a couple of weeks ago. several other funerals are planned throughout the week. just moments ago, police in newtown held a press conference about the newest developments in the case. >> the plan is to try to resume normalcy for school classes tomorrow except for those members at the sandy hook school. they will be excused, of course, until further notice. >> we'll have more on the future of sandy hook, the school itself in a few minutes. police say they still have work in their investigation. right now, they are interviewing witnesses in hopes of learning more about the horrifying massacre. the shooting, as you can imagine, is affecting parents and kids all over the country, including right here in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in san francisco with more on how students will honor the victims in newtown -- newtown, today. >> reporter: well, they plan to stand in solidarity with the studen
